NY2NO

New York 2 New Orleans Coalition

Work in NYC

While there is still a lot of work to do in New Orleans, the job does not end there. The rebuilding process in New Orleans is just a part of a massive movement for social, racial, and economic equality and it is essential that we continue to fight for the rights of all of our brothers and sisters all across the country, from New Orleans all the way to our own neighborhoods. We recognize that Katrina simply uncovered a number of underlying systematic issues that existed long before the storm ever hit, as well as in every city and town across the United States. Therefore we are trying to stand in solidarity with all victims of racism, classism, poverty, gentrification, and any other forms of systematic oppression that are living right here in New York City.

Committees

As a result of our reinvention convention in October, 2008, where 50 of our members came together to discuss the restructuring of the organization, NY2NO has formed committees, allowing more students to become a part of the organizing process. Now different parts of the organizing work are carried out by different groups of people. If you are interested in organizing within NY2NO by joining a committee, just contact them through the email listed below.

Community Service Project:

The Committee for New York Organizing in NY2NO is focused on organizing in our own communities throughout New York City. Right now, we are networking with NYC-based organizations whose goals are condusive to ours. We have made connections with a number of local grass-roots community organizations, as well as the Right To The City Coalition which is a coalition of New York groups committed to fighting gentrification and working toward social equality. Since establishing these partnerships, NY2NO has now established it's own city wide community service program to give students an opportunity work in with these groups and get a taste of student leadership and activism.

Trip Planning Committee:

Although we have now expanded, NY2NO was originally created as an organization that ran student-led trips to New Orleans to participate in rebuilding and community organizing efforts. This part of our organization is still very much alive, and we have brigades go down every break to work in solidarity with various local organizations in reviving the Lower Ninth Ward to meet the people's needs, as well as train student organizers who will come back to the city and continue organizing. The trips are now being planned in this committee, so that students who participate in them have a chance to come back and be a part of the planning themselves.
