Food Justice Summer 2010

This Summer NY2NO will be holding ten 14-day brigades surrounding food justice and youth empowerment. There will be 500 college and high school students from all across the United States participating in the Food Justice Summer. By creating urban farms, new schools, and storm-resistant homes, all the young people tackle social and environmental inequities while developing critical skills in community organization, farming, education, and construction to begin the nationwide movement.

Each brigade will be staying at Our School at Blair Grocery (OSBG) in the Lower Ninth Ward, New Orleans for half of the trip. At OSBG, participants will be:
  • Building urban farms and providing job opportunities through local farmer's markets.
  • Participating in workshops with OSBG students about the the history of Environmental Justice, Youth Empowerment, Racism, and many more.
  • Canvassing the neighborhood to raise awareness about the School at Blair Grocery, the rebuilding process, hurricane evacuation
For the other half of the trip the brigade will be staying in Tangipahoa, a town an hour northeast of New Orleans. At Tangipahoa, participants will be:
  • Learning and practicing sustainable farming techniques.
  • Employing Tangipohoan youth on the farm.
  • Building relationships between youth of NYC, the 9th Ward, and Tangipohoa through discussions and workshops.
  • Developing an effective and convenient evacuation plan for the citizens of the Lower Ninth Ward.

Fundraising for Food Justice Summer

Letter-Writing Campaign: In order to both raise awareness and funds for Food Justice Summer, NY2NO is flying into mailboxes across the nation with a new fundraising letter to kindly ask for donations. All trip participants are required to send fundraising letters to friends and families, but anyone can do it! Even you! Download our fundraising letter and send 'em out to everyone you know and love. Every donation counts!

Outreach to Local Businesses: NY2NO will be expanding it's network of support to include local businesses in the NYC area. In exchange for a portion of profits, NY2NO will be holding events at and advertising for participating establishments. If you think a business near you would be willing to partner with NY2NO, tell them about Food Justice Summer or send them our Business Outreach Letter.
